New research from Program Manager Xiao Ge and Co-Director Hazel Markus found that how people view the purpose of AI differs by their cultural backgrounds. People were introduced to different types of AI, such as an education AI, which could make individualized recommendations to improve student learning. Study participants in China, compared to those in the U.S., said that it was more important that people feel personally connected to AI rather than having control over AI’s functions and behaviors. Developers should consider the values of diverse groups to ensure AI can be useful for populations across the world.
