Markus and Hamedani Deliver Keynote at IACCP 2026

At the IACCP 2026 convention in Leuven, Co-Director Markus and Executive Director Hamedani gave a keynote talk on the hidden power of cultural defaults for change.

Co-Director Hazel Markus and Executive Director MarYam Hamedani delivered a keynote on the hidden power of cultural defaults for change at the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP) 2026 convention in Leuven, Belgium. Their talk discussed how cultural defaults - taken-for-granted, enduring, often tacit assumptions about the self, others, and society that are common in a culture - can act as headwinds or tailwinds for change efforts, drawing on examples from public health, government aid, and organizational behavior. The talk made the case that change efforts succeed or fail not just on the merits of the interventions themselves, but on how they interact with cultural defaults of the broader context.
